A medal controversy has emerged from the 2026 Winter Olympics, leaving athletes and organizers alike with a broken promise. The issue? Some medals are literally breaking apart!
Imagine the disappointment of the German biathlon team, who proudly won bronze, only to have their medal fall apart during their celebration. An Instagram video captures the moment, showing the medal detaching from its ribbon as the athletes jumped for joy.
Andrea Francisi, the chief games operations officer for Milan-Cortina 2026, acknowledged the problem. "We are aware and investigating," Francisi stated. "We want the medal ceremony to be perfect, as it's a significant moment for the athletes."
But here's where it gets controversial... Will athletes receive replacement medals? The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee is awaiting the organizers' decision.
This isn't the first time medal quality has been questioned. As of February 2025, a whopping 220 requests were made to replace medals from the Paris 2024 Games due to wear and tear, accounting for about 4% of all medals awarded. Diver Yasmin Harper, Team GB's first medalist in 2024, noticed her medal was "tarnishing."
